Terms of use
Last updated September 2026. The rules for using Summit Goat, in plain words.
Summit Goat is a small, independent trekking guide. We collect as little as we can: there are no accounts, and nothing you type into the readiness quiz, the gear calculator or the trip planner is sent to us. Questions about this page: [email protected].
Mountains are dangerous: use your own judgement
Everything on Summit Goat is general information to help you plan. It is not professional, medical, legal or insurance advice, and it can't replace a qualified guide, local knowledge or your own judgement on the day. Weather, snow, rockfall, trail closures and rules change, sometimes overnight. Always check current conditions and official sources (park authorities, hut keepers, local tourist offices) before and during your trek, and turn back when in doubt.
We try hard to be accurate, but we can be wrong
Distances, heights, times, prices, permit rules, opening dates and insurance terms come from official pages, maps and open data, and we note when a figure is approximate. They can be out of date or wrong. Maps and route lines come from OpenStreetMap and our own terrain rendering and are not a substitute for a proper hiking map. Readiness scores and gear totals are estimates. If you spot a mistake, please tell us at [email protected] and we'll fix it.
Links, bookings and purchases
When you follow a link to a shop, tour operator, booking site or insurer, you deal with that company under its own terms. We don't sell anything on this site ourselves, and we aren't responsible for other companies' products, prices or services. Some links are affiliate links; see our affiliate disclosure.
Who owns what
- The text, illustrations, the Barnaby character, the calculators and our terrain maps are © 2026 Summit Goat. You're welcome to link to any page and quote short passages with a link back.
- Photos belong to their photographers and are used under the licence named under each photo (Creative Commons or public domain), via Wikimedia Commons. They have been resized for the web.
- Route data is © OpenStreetMap contributors, available under the Open Database Licence; downloaded GPX files keep that licence. Map tiles belong to their providers (OpenTopoMap, OpenStreetMap, Esri, Waymarked Trails), whose credits appear on the map.
- Elevation data for our terrain maps comes from public sources (including NASA SRTM) via the Terrain Tiles dataset on AWS.
Liability
To the extent the law allows, Summit Goat isn't liable for any loss, injury or damage that results from using the information on this site. Nothing in these terms limits liability that can't be limited by law.
