2027 Hiking Permit and Hut Booking Calendar

The hardest part of many famous treks happens months before you lace your boots: getting the permit or the bed. Most of the big ones open on fixed dates over the winter, and a few sell out within minutes. This page lists those dates for the 2027 season in one place.

How to read it. Open now means you can book today. Published means the official page gives this window. Expected means the 2027 dates are not out yet and we show the window used for 2026, which most of these systems repeat each year. Always confirm on the official page before you plan around a date. We checked every row on 27 October 2026 and will update the page as official 2027 dates appear.

Booked on a rolling basis

  • John Muir Trail and Yosemite wilderness: Weekly lottery 24 weeks ahead for 60% of permits; the other 40% are released 7 days ahead. $10 to apply, $5 per person if you win.
  • Grand Canyon backpacking: Early access lottery from the 16th of the month five months ahead to the 1st of the month four months ahead; what's left goes on sale three months ahead. Day hikes, rim to rim included, need no permit.
  • Lost Coast Trail: New dates are released every day at 7 a.m. Pacific, three months ahead. $12 per person plus $6 per permit.
  • Old Rag: A $2 day ticket from 1 March to 30 November: 400 a day released 30 days ahead and 400 five days ahead, at 10 a.m.
  • Mount Teide summit: Permits for the last path to the crater are booked on Tenerife ON, in two-hour slots between 9:00 and 17:00. Book two to three months ahead in busy periods.
  • Laugavegur Trail: The FÍ huts had not announced their 2027 booking date when we checked. Join their mailing list to hear when it opens; July and August go first.

The next three months

  • Now: Tour du Mont Blanc refuges are open for 2027. The bottleneck nights on the classic stages go first. Our TMB 2027 guide explains the new rule on the French side.
  • November: Inca Trail permits for 2027 are expected to go on sale through licensed operators, as they did on 17 November 2025 for 2026. If you want a date in May, June or July, talk to an operator before then.
  • January: three windows open close together: the Angels Landing spring lottery (1 to 20 January), Grand Teton backcountry reservations (early January) and the GR20 refuge platform (mid to late January).

Lottery or first come, first served?

The calendar mixes two systems, and they need different tactics.

Lotteries (Half Dome, Mount Whitney, the Enchantments, Angels Landing, the Wonderland early access) are random. Applying on the first day of the window gives you no better chance than applying on the last. What helps is choosing flexible dates, weekdays and the shoulder months, and reading each lottery's rules on groups and alternate leaders. Our permit lotteries guide has the details.

First come, first served (TMB refuges, Havasupai, the Teton Crest, the GR20, Old Rag tickets) is a race. Make your account the week before, know your exact dates and a second choice, and be online when the window opens.

If you miss out

  • Daily and walk-up permits. Half Dome runs a daily lottery two days ahead, Angels Landing a day-before lottery, the Enchantments a next-day lottery, and the Teton Crest and Wonderland keep part of their quota for walk-ups.
  • Cancellations. Released permits reappear on Recreation.gov, often at odd hours.
  • A similar trek without the race. Most parks have a fine day hike nearby that needs no lottery. Instead of the TMB, look at the Peaks of the Balkans or the Făgăraș ridge. Browse all treks.

Before you pay for any permit, check that your travel insurance covers the altitude and the rescue side of the trip, and that you have time to train for it.
